Australian Open Review
Caroline’s first and Roger’s twentieth is one way to describe the outcome of this year’s Australian Open Championships. Caroline Wozniacki finally won a Grand Slam at the expense of Simona Halep who finished a Grand Slam runner up for the third time, whilst Roger Federer notched up his sixth Australian crown and 20th Grand Slam win in total after a hard fought final against Marin Cilic.
Caroline used the Babolat Pure Aero+ racket, a frame that is 0.25 inches longer than the standard Pure Aero, strung with Babolat VS Touch natural gut strings, whilst Simona played with the Wilson Burn 100 Countervail strung with Luxilon Alu Power strings. In the semi-finals Caroline outplayed Belgium’s Elise Mertens, who also used a Babolat frame, the latest version of the long standing Pure Drive. Simona saved match points before squeezing past 2016 champion Angelique Kerber, who played with the Yonex Vcore SV100 strung with Yonex’s own Polytour Fire string .
On the men’s side Federer played with his regular set up of Wilson Pro Staff 97 RF Autograph racket strung with a hybrid of Wilson Natural Gut mains and Luxilon Alu Power Rough crosses. Cilic used Head’s new Graphene Touch Prestige Mid racket, strung with a hybrid of Babolat VS Touch natural gut mains and Luxilon Alu Power crosses. Whilst both Federer and Cilic are both Grand Slam winners, their two semi-final opponents both progressed much farther than they’d ever done before. Britain’s Kyle Edmund played with the Wilson Pro Staff 97 strung with Luxilon Alu Power Rough, whilst South Korea’s Hyeon Chung used the Yonex VCore Dual G 97 for his exciting run to the last four. Chung’s tournament was highlighted by his win over six-time champion Novak Djokovic, who was using the latest version of Head’s Speed Pro. There was a little bit of history made in the Men’s Doubles, where Oliver Marach of Austria lifted the title with Croatia’s Mate Pavic. Pavic used the Wilson Ultra Tour, whilst Marach became the first player to win a Grand Slam title with a racket from French company Artengo, the Artengo TR990. For the record their opponents Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah both played with the Babolat Pure Aero.
